As the Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps (EVAC) enters its 65th year of service to the Town of Eastchester and the Villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe, it’s time to look back at the historic year that was 2016. During 2016, EVAC welcomed 43 new probationary members to our team, bringing our total active roster to 128. Our dedicated team of EMTs and drivers have logged in over 25,000 volunteer hours, and we truly needed every minute of it. Over the past couple of years we have seen an increase in our call volume, and this year was no different. Over the past twelve months EVAC answered 2,440 calls for service in our jurisdiction plus an additional 129 calls in the surrounding areas, giving us a total of 2,569 for 2016 (5.6% increase from 2015 and the most on record in EVAC’s history!). Although we pride ourselves as being one of the most respected and busiest volunteer ambulances in the county, we could not have done it without a little bit of help. Of those 2,440 calls, we requested and received mutual aid 84 times which amounted to only 3.6% of our call volume; not bad we think. We would like to thank our neighbors at the Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Empress EMS for assisting us when needed. Without this team, EVAC would not be able to provide the top shelf service that we do, and we would not be considered one of the top volunteer ambulance corps in New York State without them.
We also updated our fleet this year. In June, we purchased a 2016 Ford Interceptor Utility to replace 57M1 (2011 Chevy Tahoe). After a few customization's, the truck was placed into service on September 10th. As we all know, nothing goes to waste here at EVAC, so the Tahoe was redesigned and placed back into service on November 8th as 5706, which is used by President Mikos and Chief Louros. We also purchased a 2017 Lifeline Ambulance from Eastford Fire & Rescue Sales, which will be placed into service early this new year.
Additionally, we got a little creative this year and decided that sometimes two wheels are better than four. In May, EVAC Lt. Nick Mardikian, with help from EMT Mark Tamarin, developed an EMS Bike program. With their help, EVAC purchased two brand new Fuiji Code 1 Police Mountain Bikes and certified eight members through the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association. You can see pictures and learn more about these vehicles via our social media accounts like Facebook and Instagram.
Speaking of social media, we have to a give a BIG round of applause to our Public Information Officer/Social Media Coordinator Max Goldberg. Max has gone above and beyond our expectations when it comes to his social media posts. They are not only informational, but optimistic and inspirational, and we have seen an increase in application requests due to them. Utilizing Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, we have been able to expose the public (and even international fans) to the inner workings of Eastchester EMS as well as the dedicated members that get the ambulance out the door. With over 4,000 Instagram followers and over 1,000 Facebook fans, Eastchester EMS has solidified itself as one of the most socially active emergency service agencies in the state. We currently average around 30,000 Instagram views a week and hope to blow past that number in the coming year. Social media has proven to be a great way to expose your agency to the public and to inform them of how professional, dedicated and courtesy our volunteer and paid staff are on a daily basis.
The last staff member we are going to highlight is EMT Nick Malizia. Nick took over and revamped our CPR program in August. Since then, he has added five new instructors and set up steady/consistent classes each month. He has also introduced new courses including Heartsaver Pediatrics, Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogen, and soon will start offering ACLS and PALS. Thank you to our community for your constant support and continued generosity. We are looking forward to another wonderful year ahead!
