The walk was in honor of all those who have been diagnosed with one of the many blood cancers, including one of EVAC's current members, Desiree Granato - a survivor. It was great to see so many supporters come out on that cold night to "light up the night" in the battle to conquer cancer. As a team, EVAC raised over $2,000 in support of this great cause. EVAC is proud to have participated in this wonderful event and is looking forward to participating again next year! The dangerous curve on the Hutch added another car to its crash count as the Pontiac sedan flew off the roadway, overturning and landing more than 50 feet into the woods, coming to rest against a tree. The car had a total of five occupants; four adults and one child; all but one adult were found walking around outside the vehicle; the fifth victim required minor extrication by rescue crews. The multi-agency dispatch sent emergency crews from the two closest districts: Eastchester and New Rochelle. Medical Operations were headed by Eastchester EMS Chief Mikos, 57-11, alongside the Eastchester EMS Paramedic, 57-M1, as well as all three ambulances from Eastchester EMS (EVAC). Westchester County Police also responded to the scene. After all patients were extricated from the crash scene and brought out of the woods to street level, EMS Command took over patient care as various members from Eastchester EMS took on designated roles in mass casualty operations to render care to all five victims of the crash, ensuring they received top-notch, undivided pre-hospital care. Transport decisions were made to transport all patients to a local trauma center after being stabilized in the ambulances. All patients sustained only minor injuries. This event consisted of various food vendors, fun activities for the children, live music by the band Father Nelson and an extravagant fireworks display by Grucci, which ended the night's festivities. Members of EVAC were needed to assist patrons for minor injuries and medical complaints, but luckily there was not a need for any hospital transports. Tue, 26 Jul 2011 17:46:35 GMT http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=17 Better CPR Saves Lives http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=15 The Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps (EVAC) continues to be on the forefront of prehospital medicine. This week, EVAC placed into service two Lucas Mechanical CPR devices. These devices provide consistent, high quality CPR to victims in cardiac arrest allowing rescuers to focus on other crucial, time-sensitive tasks while Lucas worries about compressions. Researchers and physicians have realized that high quality CPR is the MOST important aspect of a successful resuscitation. EVAC recognizes this need and responds with the best technology available, every day. In the event of cardiac arrest, EVAC EMTs and Paramedics respond with a battery of life saving equipment including the Lucas device, the ResQPod (an impedence threshold device that improves blood flow by creating negative pressure in the chest), IO Drills (a highly-effective device used to administer fluids and life-saving medications into the bone), the Phillips FR2 automated defibrillator, and the LifePak15 (the latest in manual defibrilation technology available). Our EMTs and Paramedics are highly trained and prepared to respond to the most dire of emergencies any time, 24/7/365. Sun, 03 Jul 2011 00:11:48 GMT http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=15 EVAC Memorial Garden Update http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=14 After completing all of the stone work, graciously supplied by Sammarco Stone and Supply, Inc. of New Rochelle, NY, the memorial garden in front of EVAC's headquarters began to take shape. EVAC member Mikey Tomechko and EVAC Lt. Anthony Gaudio continued to work feverishly to complete the next phase of the project; installation of the bench and plant material. The plant material, provided by Shemin Nurseries, for the garden features Hydrangeas, Spirea, Azaleas and Liriope, all are different types of flowering perennials to celebrate the lives of those the garden is meant to commemorate. Also mixed in with these flowering perennials are some evergreen shrubs, Japanese Chesapeake Holly and Boxwoods, both of which are intended to demonstrate the never ending impressions those people left on the Corps. Finally, the Japanese Purple Leaf Plum tree, the foundation of the garden, was selected to one day grow out to the same size as its sibling on the other side of the driveway, which is also in remembrance to a member who provided the Corps with many years of service and dedication. As this plant material continues to grow in, the members of the Corps as well as members of the community are encouraged to come and enjoy the garden both day and night on the bench that was installed along the pathway. The bench, designed and manufactured by Loll Designs of Duluth, Minnesota, is made of heavy duty recycled plastic from recycled gallon milk jugs, and is meant to provide an aspect of sustainability to the garden. At night, the garden is highlighted with LED uplights by Kichler Lighting, to not only provide accent lighting but also to illuminate the symbol of Freedom, the American Flag, and those serving our country. Continue to check back in, to see pictures of the garden completed when the installation of commemoration memorial to those who have provided their services to the Corps and have passed on is installed. If you would like to donate to the Memorial Garden, to the Corps in general, or if you have any questions please feel free to email info@eastchesterems.com Wed, 15 Jun 2011 03:41:19 GMT http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=14 EVAC Members Give WISE Presentations at Eastchester High School http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=13 While many other high school students were either studying for finals or completing the last few classes before the end of the school year, EVAC members Nick Nieminen and Mike Louros, both graduating seniors of the class of 2011 at Eastchester High School, were busy giving presentations of their work they recently completed as part of their participation in the WISE Program. According to the WISE Services website (www.wiseservices.org), the goal of the WISE program is to enable high school seniors to receive academic credit for their participation in an internship or specialized project in an area of which they are interested in such as medicine or business and be involved in that area for a period of time during their senior year of high school. Mike and Nick, although members of EVAC prior to beginning their WISE experience, were able to add their volunteer service time to the Corps through their participation in WISE, resulting in an increase in the experiences they shared at EVAC. Each young man was able to provide to the handful of faculty and students listening in on their presentations with different experiences they had gone through during their time. Mike's presentation began with him describing to the audience the story of an MVA he and his crew responded too. He found this story unique because he and his crew, upon arriving on the scene found that the patient had already extricated themselves from the vehicle yet the patient was complaining of pain to their head, neck and back. This required Mike and his crew led by EMT Mikey Tomechko to complete a long board immobilization of the patient via a standing take down. After completing the story, Mike went on to demonstrate to Mrs. Rothschild, the coordinator of the WISE Program at Eastchester High School, and the onlooking faculty and students just what a standing take down looks like. He was assisted by EMT Mikey Tomechko and graciously was able to use Nick Nieminen as the the patient to provide the live demonstration. Careful as to not be repetitive in their respective presentations, Nick decided to give the audience an in-depth look into EVAC's first-in backpacks. These bags are made up of all of the essential gear EMTs need upon arriving to a patient such as oxygen therapy, bag valve masks, gauze and bandages, and cold paks among other things. Nick also provided the audience with the recap of an MVA that he and his crew responded too in the cold of winter. The crew was toned out for a rollover with entrapment on the Hutch, and upon arriving found a car down the embankment with one patient inside. The car was still all intact and it was determined that it spun out and slid off the roadway due to the icy conditions at the time. He also explained to the audience that this patient again was immobilized due to having head, neck and back pain. Both young men did a fine job in their presentations and represented EVAC with the utmost professionalism and knowledge. Good work Mike and Nick! Wed, 15 Jun 2011 03:42:27 GMT http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=13 New Paramedic Fly-Car Placed Into Service http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=12 On Friday May 27th, following a special Benediction by Father Dawson Ambosta of the St. Joseph's Church in Bronxville, EVAC placed its brand new, 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe into active duty. This vehicle will be driven by the on-duty Paramedic, and is used 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This vehicle, referred to as a "fly-car" is able to quickly respond to numerous calls around town when needed, bringing the highest level of medical care available to our patients. New emergency medical equipment that has been added to this vehicle includes: - (2) LifePak15 Cardiac Monitor/Defibrillators - KnoxBox narcotics storage vault - (2) EZ-IO Drills (Intra-osseous Infusion System) - Lucas Chest Compression System (to replace traditional hands on CPR) The fly-car also contains various state-of-the-art safety features to keep our Paramedics safe while on duty. These include: - High visibility emergency LED lighting - Reflective chevron striping on rear cargo door - Rear view backup camera mounted to rear cargo door - Low frequency siren and speaker system (Howler) which allows for penetrating bursts of low frequency siren sound for use in heavy traffic intersections or high ambient noise conditions - Fully customized cargo compartments where gear is stored in such a manner to protect occupants of the vehicle from the shifting of equipment Thanks to all of the vendors that were a part of the fly-car's design: - Hoselton Automall - East Rochester, New York - San Signs and Awnings - Yonkers, New York - Admiral Specialty Vehicles - Spencer, New York - Warnock Fleet and Leasing (Whelen Sounds and Lighting) - East Hanover, New Jersey - MetroCom Wireless, Inc - Bedford Hills, New York - Glen Capello, Vehicle Modifications - Bronxville, New York Thank you always to the Town of Eastchester and Villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe as well as all of our residents and merchants for their continued support of our Operations! This garden, an addition to the existing area around the stone base of the American flag, will honor EVAC members who have passed away and also the emergency services personnel who lost their lives across the country on September 11, 2001. It will include a comfortable sitting area, a memorial plaque, and a brick walkway which will bear the names of those cherished EVAC members. The garden was designed completely by EVAC member Michael Tomechko, a 2009 graduate of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University. It was originally meant to only commemorate those lost in the September 11th attacks, but that idea soon grew into the current plan of also honoring the former members of EVAC. Michael and EVAC Lieutenant Anthony Gaudio have both been volunteering their time these last few weekends on this project and are hoping to complete the garden in the next few weeks. A formal dedication ceremony will be held in the next few months. If you have any questions regarding the memorial garden, if you would like to donate to the garden's fund, or recommend a former member for the memorial walkway, please email info@eastchesterems.com. Nick Louros, Kevin Lynch, Anthony Gaudio and Tim Frusciante joined the Yonkers Police Benevolent Association today, February 26th, to raise money and shave their heads in support of children with cancer at JC Fogarty's restaurant in Bronxville, NY. Together, Team Eastchester EMS raised $6,275. The proceeds will go to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, who proudly represent themselves as "a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives." It was great to see so many committed and kind-hearted family members and friends come together to support such a wonderful cause. Eastchester EMS thanks all those who have donated. Sat, 25 Sep 2010 20:34:36 GMT http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=7 EVAC 57-B2 Responds to MCI On Interstate 287 WB; Overturned Van http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=4 AS PER THE JOURNAL NEWS: Day Laborer Van Overturns Along I-287 in White Plains; Atleast 10 hurt WHITE PLAINS — Ten people were injured, three seriously including one with life-threatening injuries, after a day laborer van carrying at least 10 people slid off Interstate 287 about 7 a.m. today and overturned into some trees near Exit 8. State Police Trooper Carlton DeLoatch said the driver, who was unhurt, said his extended van slid out of control on the wet pavement. His identification was unavailable early this morning. The passengers, none of whom was identified, were all tossed or ejected from the van. Some were pinned beneath it, some lay on the side of the road. They were all transported to local hospitals. Fire officials at the scene said those in the van were day laborers, but police could not confirm that. Two lanes of westbound traffic were closed for emergency vehicles. The van was wedged against trees on the grassy verge between I-287 and Westchester Avenue. Westbound traffic was backed up for several miles; eastbound traffic was slow past the scene. Police had cleared the area by 8:30 a.m. but the investigation was continuing, DeLoatch said Mon, 23 Aug 2010 13:54:23 GMT http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=4 Teen Struck by Train Close to Bronxville Station http://www.eastchesterems.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=5 As per News 12: A Bronx teen remains in critical condition after she was struck by a Metro-North train over the weekend. According to police, 17-year-old Christin Reimer was walking with a friend near the Bronxville train station just before 1 p.m. Officials say pedestrians are not allowed to walk in that area and the two teens were caught off guard when the train approached. With no clearance on either side of the tracks, the two attempted to outrun the northbound train, Anders said. "The boy made it, the girl did not. She crouched down apparently trying to get out of the way. She was hit by the third or fourth car, according to the post-accident forensic investigation," Anders said in an email. Since the area is on a curve, the engineer didn't see the teen or realize she had been hit, and continued to North White Plains, Anders said. According to witnesses, the impact of the hit tossed the young girl nearly 20 feet down an embankment between the Bronxville and Fleetwood railroad tracks. The other teen was not injured. Reimer is being treated at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx where she has gone through several emergency surgeries for a shattered pelvis and other fractures. Doctors say she is expected to recover. As per EMTBravo: EVAC and Medic 1 arrived on scene at the same time as EFD. The original call location was the train station but there was a walk-in to EFD station #3 that told them where the patient was. Engine 29 updated the location to the rear of the Midland Gardens apartment complex for the responding units. I believe BPD found the exact location of the patient as they had 2 cars on scene first. Everyone worked together extremely well and provided the best care possible given the tough nature of the call. EVAC was on scene for just about 10 minutes before transporting to Jacobi. 60 Control made the trauma notification to Jacobi for EVAC and total transport time was approximately 12 minutes. Excellent work by all on scene and we all are hoping for a full recovery for the young girl. John was a dedicated volunteer, willing to give up his free time whenever possible and just simply loved to help people and make them smile. Most remember Cheech for his wonderful "family dinners" that he would prepare for the crews at EVAC, or for the amount of emergency lighting he managed to cram onto his motorcyles! A memorial service was held at the Westchester Funeral Home in Eastchester followed by a candlelit procession up Main Street with bagpipers and vehicles from EVAC and the Eastchester Police Department. A reception followed at EVAC's headquarters. It was a true celebration of Cheech's wonderful life. Please see the obituary that appeared in the Journal News on August 4th, 2010. R.?. W.?.
